Penan Diaries
Mick is going out to Borneo to spend a year living with the Penan.
By sending back video diaries of the project he hopes to keep a high profile of the plight of these peace loving hunter gatherers. The aim is to give as many people as possible a personal connection to their problem as it is this, he believes, that will galvanise people into action.
Mick will also be plotting the movements and activities of a Penan group over the course of a year using a GPS device. This information can be used in legal actions where Penan are fighting for native customary rights (NCR) to land. If they can prove they managed the land in a particular area and have done so before 1958 under Malaysian law they are entitled to that land.
This is very difficult for them to prove as they are nomadic and do not keep a written record of their history.
Mick needs sponsorship to provide the video camera and a satellite broadband connection necessary, as the cost is prohibitive as a private venture. He is not seeking money for any other part of the project.
The aim is to try and get some media interested in daily video diaries from the Penan, then off the back of the media exposure sponsorship should follow.
